Occupational Therapy for Kids

Sensory Regulation • Motor Development • Independence & Self-Care • Handwriting • Self-Advocacy Skills

Our Approach

At Bloom Pediatric Therapy, we take a collaborative approach to occupational therapy. We believe that children make the most progress when their parents, teachers, and therapists all work together toward a common goal. Let’s help your child gain new skills and build confidence!

Evaluations

The first time we meet with your child, we will observe their developmental skills and complete standardized testing. Since you know your child best, we will also gather your input on their strengths and challenges. In many cases, we will consult with teachers before making a plan for therapy.

Sensory Regulation

We will support your child as they learn to process sensations from their environment during fun activities—like kinetic sand tables and obstacle courses! In some cases, we may also teach strategies from the Zones of Regulation or the Alert program. Depending on your child’s needs, sensory regulation therapy will focus on helping them:

  • Gain self-awareness and self-regulation skills

  • Advocate for their sensory needs by recognizing when there is a sensory “mismatch” and taking action

  • Improve their attention, focus, and motor control

  • Participate in everyday activities like getting dressed, sitting at circle, and playing with peers

Fine Motor & Gross Motor Skill Development

We are experts at finding the “just right challenge” for your child, and helping them build fine motor skills during fun and meaningful activities. Your child will practice beading, cutting paper to make a craft, using small toys, playing games, lacing shoes, building with clay, and more! Our sessions will focus on helping them:

  • Grasp a pencil to draw and write with ease

  • Care for themselves, especially while dressing and feeding themselves

  • Reduce frustration and increase confidence in their motor skills, so they can focus on higher-level skills like math or forming letters

Self-Care Skills

Children need to master several foundational skills in order to complete daily activities like getting dressed, eating lunch, and brushing their teeth! We will break down challenging self-care tasks to identify the areas where your child needs the most support and focus on building those skills in the real world. Occupational therapy will help your child:

  • Independently dress, eat, and perform hygiene tasks

  • Successfully participate in their daily routines

  • Develop confidence in their ability to take care of themselves

Handwriting

At Bloom Pediatric Therapy, we take the stress out of writing! Using fun movement activities and techniques from Handwriting Without Tears, we support children of all ages on their writing journeys— from copying drawings, to forming letters, to writing silly stories. Handwriting intervention will help your child:

  • Develop a solid foundation of writing skills as expectations and demands increase in school

  • Improve the legibility of their handwriting so that it doesn't detract from other academic subjects

  • Learn to write in cursive (if interested)

  • Feel confident about their handwriting skills
